Kinokuniya Books Is a Great Place For Manga

08/26/2011

When it comes to getting my manga fix here in NYC, one of the main places I like to hit up is Kinokuniya.  Situated right across the street from beautiful Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan on 6th Ave. between 40/41st Street, this store is pretty solid when you are looking for your titles.

Review: Demon King Daimao

08/24/2011

When starting a new anime series, many times there is not much I know about it, just that it looks like it will be a good show.  I do this so I don’t end up reading spoilers (which I HATE by the way).  When it came to Ichiban Ushiro no Dai Maō, or Demon King Daimao, it looked promising.  And for the most part, it really was in my opinion.

WARNING: If you intend to watch this series or have not yet finished it, there will be SPOILERS in this post.

The plot of the show seemed pretty interesting to me.  A transfer student (Sai Akuto) comes to a magical academy and aspires to be a top ranked grand priest who will be able to make the world a better place.  Ironically, he is deemed to be the future Demon King that will bring death and chaos to the world.  Kinda the opposite of what he was looking for, but this is where all of the conflicts in the story stem from.  Also, since this is a type of harem anime, many girls try to get with Akuto and is another source of conflict.

Are Fillers Really Bad?

08/23/2011

If you have ever watched anime or read manga, you mostly likely ran into the inevitable filler in the series.  Whether it was a simple chapter/episode or a filler story arc, this is a concept that is common in the industry.

Any time I go on forums or message boards, I have not once seen a positive comment when it comes to a filler.  In fact, the word “filler” in anime and manga has a negative connotation attached to it.  It seems that people think it’s just there to “fill” in the story.  And they do have a point.  But in my opinion, fillers are actually pretty good.

People’s initial feeling towards fillers

When it comes to watching anime, there are two ways to watch it.  Either you have to wait for the anime you want to watch comes out in your language (English for me) or you can watch it in Japanese with subtitles.  I have had this conversational with friends asking which one is better and I always get multiple answers.  It’s SUBS vs. DUBS!!

Captain America proves he’s the First Avenger

08/11/2011

My girlfriend and I finally got the chance to see Captain America recently.  We’ve been looking forward to it for some time now and were definitely impressed.

To start, I was curious how Marvel was going to handle this movie.  How were they going to bring Cap to 2011 from 1942?  If you’ve read the comics or have seen the various cartoon tv shows, there are a number of different ways the First Avenger is brought to the present day.

One of the first things I noticed about the movie was how interesting Chris Evans looked before he became the supersoldier that everyone will know him for.  To me, the CG just didn’t add up.  It didn’t look natural even though they were using Chris Evans’ real body, just scaled down with CG.  To me, it looked too CG.  But that is really one of my only criticisms about the movie.
